Recent Updates

Nexus 4

Google had recently announced two new additions to the Nexus family, Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 (official page). Nexus 4 is basically a Google version of LG Optimus G, and the Samsung-based Nexus 10 is a direct competitor to iPad. Both devices come with the new Android 4.2. Together with Nexus 7 by Asus, Google is setting standards for all other Android tablet manufacturers. Even Apple has hopped on the bandwagon and announced iPad Mini. Meanwhile, Samsung has sold more than 30 millions Galaxy SIII within five months.

Xiaomi2
In China, we have two new quad-core smartphones, Xiaomi 2 and Huawei Honor 2. Both devices come with 2 GB of RAM, 720p IPS screen, and 8MP rear camera (detailed specifications). Although these two phones have comparable, if not better, hardware specifications than the current line-up of flagship phones from Apple and Samsung, they only cost less than RM 1000. These phones also confirmed that the quad-core 2GB RAM era has arrived.

Windows8RT
The new iteration of Microsoft OS, Windows 8 has been released on 26 October 2012 with emphasis on touch interaction. For the review, you could check out the article by the Verge. Windows 8 comes with two versions, Windows RT and the usual desktop version. Windows RT is designed for ARM chipsets and shipped exclusively with the new Microsoft tablet, Surface. It could not run software that could run normally in earlier Windows versions, but follows the familiar application route like Android and iOS. With all Windows RT comes with Office 2013 RT, consumers have to rethink their needs and the boundary between using a tablet and computer.

Update (15 Nov): I forgot to mention the comparison between Nexus 4 and Xiaomi 2, both have very similar specifications (same chipsets, CPU and GPU). 16 GB Nexus 4 is selling at USD 349, whereas Xiaomi 2 is about USD 321. (Nexus 4 availability; Xiaomi 2 is sold in China only.) One of the major differences would be the OS and launcher, with Xiaomi using MIUI (Jellybean 4.1).
