Xperia Play: Personal thoughts from an old PS gamer

I tried the demo unit from Singtel shop, and here is my impression of Xperia Play. I expected the PlayStation game menu to pop up when I slide the phone but it did not happen (a quick google confirms someone messed up the settings since it is a display unit). Two similar apps (PlayStation Pocket and Xperia Play, one for official games and another for third party games, respectively ) for accessing games, I think this is a bad design. The graphics of Crash Bandicoot is bad, I know it is an old PS game, but this is pre-installed in Xperia Play, which definitely will give an bad impression, considering iPhone has demonstrated games with high-quality graphics. More marketing on the games available now for Xperia Play will be needed to convince gamers to not hold on for NGP. The buttons feel like, well, ordinary buttons. I just tried the analogue touch pad on FIFA 11. It is responsive, the middle of each touch pad has a slight protrusion to let you gauge your finger position without l

Bing and Facebook: Search More Social

Image
When I read this news, the first thing that came to my mind was "How will Google responds?" Let me explain the rivalry between Google and Facebook. First, Google is a public search engine. But have you noticed that it could not display search results on the contents of Facebook, except probably a link to the profile page? Yes, the reason comes from Facebook. They prevented search engines from accessing their data. Moreover, the recent event between Facebook and Google further deteriorate the relationship. Well, things just got worse. By providing their data to boost Bing search results on Facebook (see video above), Facebook is declaring war officially. Alliance between Bing (Microsoft) and Facebook is not new , and Facebook incorporated Bing into its search function years ago. From the comments in YouTube, this new function of Bing is available to the US mass only. To me, this is just creepy. VIA Amanz

Sort by subject in Google Images

Image
It was announced by Google Blog earlier today and is available now. A first try gives the impression that it is well designed, the sorting by subject function is generally good, one particular useful application is to learn different types of a particular object, for example types of dogs in the introduction video. However, not all search topics, such as sex, could be sort by subject. VIA Amanz

I realized that there is this DiGi WWWOW Awards while I was searching for other Malaysia tech blogs. I am surprised that there are many entries under the Fave Tech Head category, which means there are many, many tech bloggers around. I did find a few good ones and added RSS feed of their blogs to my page. According to DiGi description, this is Malaysia 1st by the people, for the people, internet for all awards. Wow! (Pun intended.) Anyway, I have also submitted my blog (yup, I am thick-skinned), so please vote for me (click the picture)!
